Assignment 7

Hi folks,

I'm back from a cold and windy Seattle, but before I get to the slide show I wanted to direct your attention to Assignment 7, question 5A: for those of you that printed the assignment, please skip this question.

The catalog is not displaying the "Current periodicals" record for you to answer correctly, so I deleted it from assignment 7 and changed it so now you only have to answer a new 5A and 5B.

If you haven't gotten up to assignment 7, then don't worry about it.

Questions? Let me know!

I'm away until Tuesday

I will be in Seattle from Friday, January 19 thru Tuesday, January 23 but will periodically check my e-mail and IM (Yahoo ID: freerangelibrarian) accounts if you need help.

You can also ask anyone at the Reference Desk for help (get used to asking librarians, it's what we're good at...the answering, not the questioning :-).

Or go to the Library Skills web page
for course information or the "Getting Started" page for a refresher.

Welcome to UNIV 106 for Spring 2007

Library Skills (UNIV 106) is an introductory course to the many wonders of libraries. I hope to see you and/or meet you when classes start January 16. If you are taking this course I would like to point a couple of things to you:

  • > The course is available on the web at http://library.boisestate.edu/skills/
  • > You need to come to the Reference Desk to "check in" so we can introduce you to the course.
  • > Get started by reading the "Getting Started" page.
  • > If you use Facebook you can check my profile: http://www.facebook.com/p/Memo_Cordova/52304655
  • > The course is one credit, go-at-your-own-pace kinda class. We have no meetings or classroom. You use the library to complete the course.
  • > If at any time you have issues/problems, please see me. I'm in the first floor of the library, room 107D.
  • > Last, enjoy the class. It'll make you a smarter researcher.
Cheers,

The Fall 2006 UNIV 106 is Over

Congratulations on finishing UNIV 106! This blog and the course are over for the Fall 2006 school year, but will surface again for the Spring 2007 semester.

Grades are due to the Registrar's office by noon on Wednesday, December 20. I will probably post them by Monday.

Have a great holiday.

The Last Day!

This is it, folks. Tomorrow (Thursday, December 14, at 6:00 pm) marks the last day to turn in your corrected assignments. If you fail to successfully complete the course, you will fail the class.

If you passed the course you are welcome to take your assignments home with you. Cherish the memories and use the assignments as guides in your future research forays.

I hope this course was helpful. Or at least, that it made you aware of the breadth of information resources available to you, and that there are librarians willing and able to help you navigate an ever-growing universe of data.

Happy holidays!

New Course Deadline

If you turned in all your completed UNIV 106 assignments last Friday, December 8, you now have until 6:00 pm, December 14 to make your corrections.

Please note: this new deadline is only for students who have completed all UNIV 106 assignments but might have to make corrections on some of them.

And on the freaky side, the library had to close 15 minutes early on Friday due to an unforeseen incident. If you were at the library trying to finish your assignments when this happened, please let me know.

Cheers,

Course Deadline

Hi everyone,

As you may have guessed this Friday, December 8, marks the end of regular classroom instruction throughout campus. It's also the day you have to turn in any and all completed assignments for UNIV 106 by 6:00 pm.

Remember, to pass the course you have to successfully complete all assignments without mistakes. After December 8 you can check at the Reference Desk to correct any mistakes you may have incurred in your rush to beat the deadline.

If you have corrections to make you have until 6:00 pm, Thursday, December 14, to get them done. No assignments will be accepted after this day.

Note, also, that the library will be open 24 hours (first floor only) during finals week (12/12 - 12/14).

If you have any questions, please call me at 426-1270, IM me at my Yahoo! id: albertsonsthelibrary, or stop by my office in the first floor of the library, room 107D.

Good luck!

I gotta do what, now?

Just a reminder to check with the Reference Desk to make sure you have no corrections to make on those assignments you have turned in so far. Repeat the cycle as necessary until you have successfully turned in all completed assignments.

If you need a refresher course on the procedures for completing UNIV 106 assignments, go to the Getting Started page. Or ask at the Reference Desk if you have questions.

Keep at it!

Final Target Date is Today

If you've been keeping tabs on your assignments you know that December 1st is the last target date, meaning that, ideally, you should be finishing assignments 19-22.

If you haven't you still have a little bit of time...but not much! All completed ungraded assignments are due Friday, December 8.

Please note: if you have any corrections to make on those assignments turned in that Friday (12/8) you have until the very last day of classes, Thursday, December 14 by 6:00 pm, to correct them.

Failure to fully complete all UNIV 106 assignments after the last day of classes will result in an "F."

Good luck!

During finals week
(12/10 thru 12/14) the library's first floor will be open 24 hours. For Christmas holiday hours, go here.

How You Doin'?

Clock: time's a ticking! So the third target date is fast approaching (November 10) and I perused the progress list we keep for UNIV 106. Let's see, there are 104 students and more than half of you haven't even started.

Shocking? Not really as you still have some time before everything comes crushing down on you. So I'm encouraging you to start working on those assignments ASAP. If you are having serious issues with the course I encourage you to visit my office (L107), or call me at 426-1270 so we can arrange a meeting.

Get going!

Another Target Date Approaches!

October 13th--a Friday, no less--marks the second "Target Date" for UNIV 106, Library Skills. What does this mean? It means you should have completed every assignment up to 13 (kinda makes sense, huh?).

I haven't heard much in the way of problems with the course so I'm assuming you are all doing fine. But if you get stuck or confused by all means ask a librarian for help or come see me in my office in room 207, right next to the Microforms room.

Keep at it!

First Target Date is Friday!

September 15 is the first "target date" and it means you should (ideally) have finished with assignments 1 through 7. Target dates are just that, a marker to pace your progress as you complete assignments. You will not be in trouble if you are not at that point; or haven't even started the course yet!

Just remember that the semester will fly by before you know it and it's a pain to have to complete a bunch of assingments just to keep up. That will guarantee a lot of erros and time spent correcting assignments.

As always, check with the Reference desk to see if you have any corrections to make or if you have trouble with an assignment.

Cake @thelibrary

It's the Library's birthday tomorrow, September 6th and you're invited to celebrate with us by getting some cake! We'll be giving away cake slices on the front steps of the library starting at 10:30 am.

In 1990 J. A. and Kathryn Albertson and Albertsons, Inc. donated six million dollars to enlarge and remodel the library (completed in 1995) to what you see today. So join us for some cake and get to know your campus library!

Making sense of it all yet?

We want you to learn and become aware of the many resources available to you at the library. If you notice anything amiss or doesn't make sense as you go about completing your UNIV 106 assignments, please bring it to the attention of one of the librarians at the desk.

And remember, after you turn in any assignments ask the person at the desk to check your folder for any corrections. If you have any questions, please let me know.
