The second target date is fast approaching: October 19! This means that, ideally, you should have completed assignments 7 thru 12. No worries if you're behind schedule, but you should really be thinking about finishing earlier assignments so you can catch up.

Remember, target dates are just indicators to give you an idea of when you should have finished what assignments, as it can get hairy if you wait until the last minute to finish the course. Besides, you still have to check with the Reference desk for corrections so you will want to have enough time while we grade your papers.

And the cardinal rule? Ask, if you have questions!

Target Date

The first Target Date came and went. No need to panic yet, right? Right! Granted, you could actually finish the entire course in one day (provided you check for corrections), but the Target Dates are there to help you pace yourself so you can learn about the library withtout feeling rushed--you get enough of that, right?

Getcher Permission Numbers Here!

If you know someone who badly wants to take UNIV 106 (hey, it could happen) but they need to have a permission number, I have several hanging around my office. Let me know and I'll gladly give them one so they can join UNIV 106. Permission numbers expire September 10th.

The library will be closed Monday, September 3th for Labor Day . Check the library's hours page for a complete list of Fall semester hours.

Free Bus Service!

Thought this might be useful to you all, if you haven't read it yet, particularly for those of you traveling from Nampa & Caldwell. From the Parking & Transportation Service at BSU:

This is a reminder about new bus services for the BSU community to begin August 27th:

1) All bus routes require a current BSU ID and BUS sticker to ride for free. The BUS sticker can be obtained for free at the Campus ID office, SUB info desk, and Parking office.

2) Route 44 from Middleton, Star and Eagle is now free with your BSU ID and BUS sticker. A map and schedule of route 44 is available on-line at http://www.valleyride.org/Portals/1/Rt44MapSked.gif

3) Route 40 and 42 are both free. These routes are combined with a new route 45. These three routes will serve as a link between BSU West and BSU Main Campus and operate from 5:51 AM to final routes just after 9:00 PM. Parking for those riding the 40, 42, and 45 routes is available for free at the West Campus, no permit needed. Three important things to remember about this new service:

* Schedule may vary depending upon weather, road conditions, construction, or other event. Riders are encouraged to allow adequate time for such variability
* Last route leaving BSU West departs at 9:15 PM and arrives at BSU Boise at 9:40 PM
* Last route leaving BSU Boise departs at 9:20 and arrives at BSU West at 9:48 PM

4) Route 43 from Caldwell to Boise is also now free, a copy of the map and schedule can be found on-line at http://www.valleyride.org/Portals/1/intercountyskeds/route43info0406.pdf

Welcome to UNIV 106 - Library Skills for Fall 2007

I'm excited to start a new semester and look forward to meeting most of you. I say "most of you" because this course is self-paced, meaning you can do as much or as little of it as you see fit--as long as you finish it by the deadline.

We have what we call "Target Dates" that simply point to specific dates when you should have finished certain assignments. You could also finish the course in one weekend. It's up to you.

But, with such freedom comes great responsibilities! While the course is not hard it is time consuming (you're in college now, huh?), so I urge you to pace yourself and use the Target Dates as a guide so you can have time to enjoy the course and your other responsibilities.

Everything about the course is available online at http://library.boisestate.edu/skills/ . You'll need to come to the library's Reference Desk so we can give you a quick orientation. Most questions about the course can be found at the Getting Started page, or ask anyone at the Reference Desk.

Just so you know...

This has been a summer of change at the Library: materials have moved, the new Starbucks will open in mid-August, the Library's birthday celebration is September 5th, and most of the Library computers now require Bronco Web authentication.

Other changes include:

• The Current Periodicals (for new journals and magazines) is now located on the north side of the Library (1st floor).The paperback browsing collection will move next to the Starbucks space (1st floor).
• New computers have been added and most will require login in with your Bronco Web user name and password (all floors).
• Starbucks' grand opening will be August 27th, the first week of classes. You can see the construction progress at our Flickr page.
• Print indexes have been rearranged and are still located north of the Reference Desk (1st floor).
• The Career collection, college catalogs and phonebooks are now located north of the Reference Desk, next to the Current Periodicals collection (1st floor).
• The Library catalog now shows you the floor location of all titles. A new Spanish interface will be available soon!
• New hires at the Library include four new librarians and one Head of Public Services.

The folks at the Reference Desk would be glad to give you a tour or answer any of your questions.

Grades UNIV 106!

Congratulations to everyone who completed UNIV 106, the Library Skills course. I submitted your grades today (May 14th, 2007) so they should be available in your Bronco Web accounts.

There is no Summer session for this course so I'll see you all you new students in Fall 2007, when we begin this dance again.

Today at 6:00 pm UNIV 106 is officially over. Barring any major difficulties I will be posting your grades on Monday, May 14th.

Thanks for taking UNIV 106, the Library Skills course. It is my sincere hope that you learned something new about the many resources available to you, and that the library is here to help you succeed in your scholarly pursuits.

May 10th is it!

Whew! Well, we're past the deadline for turning in your completed assignments. Now it's time to check for corrections at the Reference desk.

Unless you're really lucky you probably made mistakes when you rushed to make the May 4th deadline, so let's get those corrections taken care of before May 10th at 6:00 pm, as after that date school is over and you should really be thinking of your Summer plans, right?

Open 24 hours: the library!

Check it out! The first floor of the Albertsons Library will be open 24 hours a day starting 10:00 AM Sunday, May 6, through 6:00 PM Thursday, May 10.

This is great news if in your mad dash to have all your assignments done today (Friday, May 4th) you made mistakes, you will have plenty of time to correct them for you have until the absolute last day of Thursday, May 10th, to finish them.

Make sure you check at the reference desk to see if you have anything that needs your attention as nothing will be accepted after May 10th!

Extension on Course Deadline!

We have extended the day to turn in any and all assignments for UNIV 106 until Friday, May 4th at 6:00 pm. You now have an extra day to turn in your completed assignments! I've changed the "Target Date" page to reflect this.

However, if you have corrections to make you have until Thursday, May 10th, at 6:00 pm--but try to have these corrections done before that, OK? :-)

Also, the library will be open 24 hours a day during finals week , May 6 - 10.

May 3rd - Last Day!

Thursday, May 3rd, at 6:00 pm, is the last day to turn in any and all completed assignments. No exceptions! Finish them all and turn them in. If you do have corrections you'll have additional time to work on them AFTER this deadline...but everything has to be turned in tomorrow!

The crunch begins!

May 3rd! This Thursday. That's the day you will need to turn in all your completed assignments. After May 3rd we will not accept any unfinished assignments!

Now, if you turned in everything by May 3rd you will still need to check with the reference desk to make sure you have no corrections to make. If you do have to correct any mistakes you have until 6:00 PM, May 10th--again, a Thursday--to finish them up.

The good news is that the first floor of the library will be open 24 hours starting Sunday, May 6 at 10:00 AM through Thursday, May 10 until 6:00 PM. An officer from the Boise Police Department will be on duty in the library all night and can provide escort service.

Of course, there will also be coffee, graciously provided by the Associated Students of Boise State University (ASBSU).

Assignment 19 shenanigans

Please note: assignment 19, question 4 for set 4 asks the following question:

Using the GALE DIRECTORY OF PUBLICATIONS AND BROADCAST MEDIA, (ask at the Reference Desk) find the complete mailing address of the newspaper entitled Laramie Daily Boomerang published in Laramie, WY

It's been brought to our attention that this newspaper is no longer in business, sooo...you can go ahead and skip this question as we're working to replace this answer with something different.

However, you can only skip it if your assignment 19 has a "Set 4" next to the title of "General Bibliographies".

Assignments are pouring in. Now, part 2

Now that you're working hard to get all your assignments in before the May 3rd deadline, please remember to double check at the reference desk to see if you have any corrections--the turnaround time for returning your checked assignments to your individual folders is fairly quickly (overnight, maximum).

Remember, you won't get credit until you successfully finish all UNIV 106 assignments & final project correctly. And May 3rd is scarily close at hand!

The deadline for UNIV 106 is May 3rd. Any and all completed assignments have to be turned in by that date. If you haven’t started you better cram for it now as we will not accept your assignments—completed or otherwise—after the May 3rd deadline.

Target Date: March 9th

March 9th marks the third target date for UNIV 106. This means that, by March 9th, you should be finishing up assignment 13.

If you are keeping track with the Target Dates you are comfortably keeping pace with the course. Keep it up!

If you're falling behind you still have time to get going before the assignments crowd out any free time you might have before finals.

If you are done then I give you a hearty "Well done!" Feel free to pick up your assignments, take them home, frame the good ones, use the rest for insulation...whatever.
